Description

Some sample practice paged using a couple characters from Legend of Korra, from Nickelodeon. I don't own any of these characters or the template, although they are awesome.

I am trying to build up some storyboard pieces for my portfolio.

Any constructive criticism is encouraged and appreciated :)

Hey man, i stumbled upon these and thought i would give you some thoughts and some criticism (though i use that word loosely, lol) As for my credibility, i am a storyboard artist in TV animation, currently working on the New Avengers Animated series "Avengers Assemble" i have worked on Ben:10, Ultimate SPiderman, Transformers Prime, and Tron uprising just to name a few. My point is that i have seen a lot of action boards, and i think you are off to an okay start, and although that might not sound AMAZING to you, thats a LOT better than the places that have seen guys start out at in your position. You have a good handle on a shorthand version of the characters, and thats going to help you a lot in the future as you pursue this as a job. The better handle you have on the characters, the less time you will spend on getting that handle (hope thats clear, lol). Great use of Grey to separate the characters from the BG and also, you managed to use a good amount of variation in your camera depth, there is some wide shots, some medium, and some close ups as well. Thats a good thing, and anytime you can change things up for a bit, that will give the audience a break visually. Now as far as my criticisms go in the negative area, it think you need to understand how this process plays into the entirety of the animation production procedure, these boards will serve as the last line of defense for your producers at the studio as they ship these off to Korea in hopes of getting their image in the form of a final animation done with exact (or as close to) replicated moments and beats from your storyboard animatic that is created. With that on your mind, know that these things are scrutinized for their ability to play out clear action and see things through. You need to have more poses, ESPECIALLY on your action, there are a few points in the board where i cant tell exactly how something happened to a bad guy, or how Korra actually walked off from something. These things need to be spelled out, otherwise, you are leaving these actions up for the interpretation of someone that you dont even know. So make sure you are posing out EVERY piece of action and acting that you want to be seen on the boards. Another thing is pay close attention to where you are having the viewer focus with each shot. Most shots end up in the middle of the frame, so you might want to start making sure you can play your action out in that mid frame staging. Keep your characters consistent, left to right, right to left, make sure that you are thinking of where you place props, bad guys and good guys, and keep it consistent. Reference a lot man, find few of these guys on here at DA that have work in the industry , and ask them very specific questions about what you can do to improve and place yourself on the list when studios are looking for storyboard revisionists. Keep your head up and iw ll at some point when im not sleepy as hll, i will send you a more detailed level of feedback, but for now, i think you can do a lot with what i've given you, start applying. PEACE and keep at it man!
